Disputed water quality and corrective response
February–March 2026 · disputed · high materiality
A March 2026 Mail & Guardian report described a Karonga district audit alleging treated drinking-water and sanitation failures, including two uranium readings above Malawi’s drinking-water limit. Lotus said the audit was preliminary and that the team did not itself sample; Bittar said bottled water was being provided and monitoring and treatment were being improved. The article reported NWRA testing was then pending. A later investigation was identified but could not be opened; the subsequent regulator results and current remediation status remain unknown.
Attribution: Role overlaps event; causation unproven. Bittar was CEO and personally gave the company response; the report does not establish his personal responsibility for the water findings.
Relevance: Material workplace and environmental oversight; final laboratory results and remediation effectiveness were not independently obtained.
