Management background checks
Liontown’s leadership reports relevant operating, commercial, finance and people experience and delivered a producing lithium operation. Material context includes the Fundão disaster during the CEO’s Samarco board service, later dismissed charges with the individual appeal outcome unresolved, increased injury frequency, and prior Austal disclosure and union-entry proceedings. Corporate and personal outcomes are distinguished; this is partial screening.
Decision-relevant facts
Material summary
Tony Ottaviano
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer
Relevant disclosed professional background
Liontown identifies former Rio Tinto and BHP operational, projects and improvement roles; its dated commencement release says he commenced as Liontown CEO and MD on 5 May 2021. Analyst inference: the experience is relevant to the current role, subject to independent verification.
Responsibility not applicable · Role fit is inferred from issuer-described experience, not proof of individual performance or credentials.
Kathleen Valley production and FY2026 financial result
Liontown reported 391,992 dry metric tonnes of concentrate produced and A$93m net profit for FY2026, including one-off items; underlying profit was A$14m and operating cash flow A$182m. The company attributed better second-half prices as a contributor.
Role overlaps event; causation unproven · His leadership role overlapped the reported result; personal causation is not established.
Injury frequency rose during ramp-up
The rolling 12-month total recordable injury frequency rate reached 14.16 at September 2026 versus 10.99 at June 2026; Liontown said it started a two-year safety-culture programme in October.
Role overlaps event; causation unproven · His role overlaps the figures; the disclosures do not attribute individual injury or causation.
Fundão disaster and dismissed Brazilian charges
Ottaviano served on Samarco’s board as a BHP representative during the November 2015 Fundão dam failure, which killed 19 people. Brazilian prosecutors later included him in criminal charges. The Australian Federal Court recorded that all charges against him were dismissed at first instance on or about 16 December 2019 and prosecutors appealed on or about 22 January 2020. The original Brazilian dismissal and final status of his individual appeal were not obtained. A 2025 English judgment describes wider dismissals and some continuing appeals but does not establish his individual appeal outcome. No conviction or finding of personal fault is asserted.
Individual involvement documented · Board membership and the procedural history are documented; membership and allegations alone do not establish personal causation or guilt.
Evidence gaps · 4
- Prior-employer role dates, personal contribution and independently verified qualifications are incomplete.
- Targeted web searches are screening-level; complete regulator, court, sanctions and criminal records were not independently obtained.
- Topic searches reused a broad person/employer query; dedicated independent searches across all topics and material employers were not completed. Search log records source-specific findings and unsearched topics as gaps.
- The original Brazilian dismissal order and final disposition of the 2020 prosecution appeal involving Ottaviano were not obtained; wider proceedings cannot establish his personal appeal outcome.
Ryan Hair
Chief Operating Officer
Relevant disclosed professional background
Liontown says Hair previously led Covalent Lithium and Mt Holland development; he signed Covalent’s environmental policy as CEO. Liontown’s FY2026 half-year report records his 11 August 2025 COO appointment. Analyst inference: the experience is relevant to the current role, subject to independent verification.

Greg Jason
Chief Financial Officer
Relevant disclosed professional background
Austal’s 2021 resignation announcement and Liontown’s 2025 appointment disclosure identify him as Austal CFO before the TLEA and Liontown finance roles. Analyst inference: the experience is relevant to the current role, subject to independent verification.
Responsibility not applicable · Role fit is inferred from issuer-described experience, not proof of individual performance or credentials.
Austal disclosure breach and US subsidiary fraud
Jason was Austal group CFO during its 2016 ship cost review. ASIC sued Austal and then-CEO David Singleton, and in 2022 the Federal Court found company disclosure contraventions and Singleton knowingly concerned. In 2024 Austal USA pleaded guilty to securities fraud and obstruction concerning 2013–2016. ASIC’s statement identifies Jason as CFO who proposed analysis; he was not a defendant in the ASIC civil proceedings, and the cited DOJ release does not accuse him.

Responsibility not applicable · Role fit is inferred from issuer-described experience, not proof of individual performance or credentials.
Austal union-entry dispute and case penalty
The 2023 Full Federal Court judgment names Breen as a respondent and says it appeared she indicated that a union official’s proposed entry would be refused on the first of three occasions in 2021. The respondents disputed the union’s claim, and the union’s case was initially dismissed; the Full Court allowed its appeal and remitted it. A later Federal Court judgment reports an A$80,000 total penalty in the 2024 Austal case. The 2024 reasons and orders could not be opened; the precise payer and any personal order were not independently confirmed.
Individual involvement documented · The appeal court states that it appeared Breen communicated the refusal. The later source confirms only a case-level penalty; the precise orders and payer are not independently established.
Evidence gaps · 5
